How to Determine Pipe Thread Size
Pipe thread sizes do not refer to actual physical dimensions. To identify a fitting, measure the outside diameter of a male thread (MPT) or the inside diameter of a female thread (FPT) and compare it to the chart below. For example, a 1/4" NPT fitting measures approximately 0.54" in diameter. Correct sizing is especially important when selecting regulator fittings and replacement components.
